Engineering and Computer Science Excellence Scholarships are awarded to qualified first-time entering freshmen on a competitive basis. While there are no set amounts for these scholarships, they can range up to $12,000 over four years. When combined with other University scholarships and waivers for which students are eligible, total awards may approach $40,000 or more. Students may not receive scholarship funds from University or state sources which, ehn combined, would exceed the total cost of attendance as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Funds from which these Excellence Scholarships are awarded are provided by the Barrier, Hosmer, Applewhite, and Henry endowments as well as gifts provided from the Hearin Foundation, Tennessee Valley Authority, various industries, and the generosity of our many successful alumni and friends. Therefore, the total amount of scholarship funds may vary from year to year. Awards are made on a competitive basis. Therefore, there are no absolute criteria on which awards are based. Factors which are used in making scholarship decisions include ACT composite score as well as math and English subscores; high school core grade point average; and academic, athletic, and civic activities with particular emphasis placed on learship qualities. In order to be considered for an Engineering and Computer Science Excellence Scholarship a student must have a minimum high school core GPA of 3.50. Once awarded, scholarships are automatically renewed each semester, up to the maximum number of semesters included in the offer, as long as the student maintains both a cumulative and MSU GPA of 3.00 (B average) or higher, is taking a full-time course load, and is enrolling in courses appropriate for the particular engineering major. Students must also remain continuously enrolled within the Bagley College of Engineering to continue to receive the scholarship (exceptions are made for the summer term and when the student is performing a co-op work term.) To be eligible for a Henry Scholarship, students must indicate they wish to major in either Mechanical or Chemical Engineering when they apply for admission. In order to continue to receive the Henry Scholarship, the student must remain in one of the designated majors. Should a student change from Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, they will lose the Henry Scholarship. Every effort will be made to locate other scholarship funds to cover the lost funds but no guarantees can be made. Henry scholars should therefore consult with their adviser, department head, and the Office of Undergraduate Affairs prior to changing their major and explore other scholarship options. The Application Deadline University-Wide Freshman Scholarships are open to new freshmen students in all majors. They include the Schilling Leadership Scholarship, The Presidential Endowed Scholarship, and the Entering Freshman Academic Excellence Awards.
