Bagley has multiple winners at campus awards luncheon

May 1, 2017

Seven members of the Bagley College of Engineering were recognized for their exceptional research and leadership achievements at Mississippi State’s recent campus awards luncheon.

Bagley had four honorees during the Office of Research and Economic Development awards program. The recipients were chosen from four categories: faculty, research support staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Faculty: Dr. Tom Lacy

Lacy, a professor in aerospace engineering, joined the MSU faculty in 2003. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and President of the American Society for Composites. His teaching was recognized internationally with awards such as the ASE Engineering Professor of the Year, selection to the BCoE Distinguished Teaching Academy, and the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, which is presented by the American Society of Automotive Engineers.

Research Support Staff: Sheri Johnson

Johnson, a research assistant in aerospace engineering, has been an integral part of the development and growth of the ASE research program. In 2016, she was responsible for the management of over $500,000 in research grants between ASE and the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory.

Graduate Student: Mohammad Mahtabi

Mahtabi conducts research that focuses on fatigue and fracture behavior of metallic materials. He’s received numerous prestigious awards including the 2016 ASTM International Graduate Scholarship, the 2016 SAE International Fatigue Design Committee, Henry O. Fuchs Student Awards and the 2015 ASTM International EO8 Committee on Fatigue and Fracture Best Student Presentation Award.

Undergraduate Student: Alex Calhoun

Calhoun is a junior in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department and has been involved with campus research since her freshman year. While conducting research underneath Dr. Hoffman in the department of biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, and plant pathology, she realized she wanted to pursue more applied research and began working in the Human Systems Engineering Laboratory. Calhoun has supported four studies under the direction of Dr. Kari Babski-Reeves, one of which resulted in a journal publication that was featured in ISE magazine.

Benjamin F. Hilbun Faculty Leadership Program

Ten new graduates of the university’s 2016-2017 Benjamin F. Hilbun Faculty Leadership Program were also honored, two of whom are Bagley professors: Yong Fu, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering and Andy Perkins, associate professor, computer science and engineering.

Finally, Fei Yu, an associate professor in agricultural and biological engineering, was recognized for earning a patent in 2016.

“The collaborative culture we have at MSU and the wide-ranging interests of our researchers are two of the key components in our success, and we look forward to celebrating our research achievements and the outstanding work of our faculty, staff and students every spring,” said David Shaw, vice president for research and economic development.
