CAVS director at MSU receives Japanese society’s research award

The director of Mississippi State’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems is the recipient of a prestigious international research award from a society in Japan.

Rand German received the Award for Distinguished Achievement in Research from the Japan Society for Powder and Powder Metallurgy during a recent formal ceremony in the East China Sea coastal city of Hamamatsu.

He also lectured at the society’s invitation-only seminar on the topic, “Establishment of the Scientific Underpinnings in Powder Injection Molding and Liquid Phase Sintering.”

Powder metallurgy is an industrial process for forming metal parts by heating compacted metal powders to just below their melting points. Though developed more than 100 years ago, the process has gained wide recognition in the past quarter century as a superior way to produce various high-quality parts for machines and other applications.

During his visit to the island nation, German also lectured at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center in Nagoya, and at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba.

As the CAVS Chair in Mechanical Engineering, German is bringing an emphasis on the fabrication of engineered materials to MSU. In January, he begins teaching a new course in powder metallurgy.

Prior to assuming his dual leadership roles at MSU in June, German was Brush Chair Professor in Materials and director of the Center for Innovative Sintered Products at Pennsylvania State University.

The MSU research center is a major unit of the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering.
