A team of Mississippi State University students redesigning a sports utility vehicle recently took home several awards and the keys to a new 2005 Chevrolet Equinox last week at the Challenge X Year One competition.

Mississippi State is one of 17 universities from across North America competing to redesign the vehicle for better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. At the competition, the students took second place for their Project Initiation presentation, a presentation similar to ones made at GM before any vehicle is sent into production. The presentation covered all aspects of the vehicle design and showed what would make a customer want to purchase the vehicle.

The MSU team also took first place for Overall Outreach, and won the Best Community and Media Outreach. Outreach is a part of the competition that involves the students in educating the community and K-12 students about the need for more fuel efficient vehicles and alternative vehicle technology.

The Challenge X competition will span over three years. The first year involved the design and virtual modeling of the vehicle. In the coming year, the students will implement the components they have selected to create a hybrid-electric 2005 Chevrolet Equinox.
