MSU engineering student honored by international society

April 20, 2006

A Mississippi State graduate student in industrial and systems engineering is the winner of an international professional society’s 2006 Student Award for Excellence.

Kandace C. Noah of Houston, Texas, who is working on a master’s degree in the university’s Bagley College of Engineering, will receive the award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers during the group’s annual conference May 20-24 in Orlando, Fla.

“I am very honored to receive such an award,” said Noah. “A lot of credit should be given to the faculty and staff of the ISE department because they consistently have supported and encouraged me during my education at MSU.”

The award was established by IIE to recognize undergraduate students who, since the beginning of their junior year, have distinguished themselves through excellence of scholarship and campus leadership. Each member school nominates up to two students.

“Kandace is a solid engineer and natural leader,” said ISE department head Royce Bowden.

“She is an outstanding ambassador and presents a positive image of the department to prospective students, alumni and friends in her capacity as president of the Industrial and Systems Engineering REPS (Represent, Educate, Present, and Survey),” he added.

Noah received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at MSU last December. She worked for three terms as a cooperative education student with Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula. As a co-op participant, she alternated semesters between classes in Starkville and full-time employment at the Gulf Coast shipbuilding operation.

While an undergraduate, Noah served a term each as president and vice president for the campus chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. She also was actively involved in several student organizations–including the Delta Gamma social sorority, MSU Student Association and Baptist Student Union.

IIE is an international, nonprofit organization. It is the world’s largest professional society solely dedicated to the support of the industrial engineering profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity in the field.
