MSU’s Brocato chosen as ASEE Outstanding Campus Rep

March 24, 2017

The Bagley College of Engineering’s John Brocato has been named the 2016 Southeastern Section Outstanding Campus Representative by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

From L-R: Bagley’s Dr. James Warnock, Brocato, ASEE’s Dr. Grant Crawford

“It’s a real honor to have my work as Campus Rep recognized by the ASEE Southeastern Section,” Brocato said.

ASEE’s campus representatives serve as a liaison between the national organization and college campuses across the country and are vital to recruiting new members and stabilizing campus chapters, a duty that Brocato finds personally rewarding.

“I’ve been Bagley College’s Campus Representative for ASEE since 2004, and one of the reasons I relish this role is that I believe in ASEE’s mission of constantly improving education for all engineering students,” Brocato said. “I see this mission embodied every day in the BCoE, and I’m glad I get to play some part in that.”

Brocato earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English from Mississippi State University in 1991 and 1997, respectively. He’s currently working toward a doctorate in history of science and technology, also from MSU.

During his 20 years of service to his alma mater, Brocato has held instructor positions in the Bagley College of Engineering, MSU English department and MSU’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems. He is the creator and coordinator of the Shackouls Technical Communications Program and currently teaches technical writing courses geared toward engineering majors.

In addition to being a distinguished ASEE campus representative, Brocato was elected to Bagley College’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers and is a member of MSU’s University Honor Code Council.

In a field of ever-changing technology, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is a nonprofit organization consisting of individuals and institutions that encourage education efforts in engineering and engineering technology.
