STARKVILLE, Miss.—A Bagley College of Engineering student organization and its faculty adviser received honors for outstanding impact at Mississippi State University.

The Mississippi State student chapter of the American Institute for Chemical Engineers (AIChE) earned the 2014 Outstanding Student Chapter Award—securing it for the 14th consecutive year.

Each year, the organization presents this honor to less than 10 percent of its national and international chapters to recognize program quality, involvement within the university and community, enthusiasm, and professionalism.

Bill Elmore, the Mississippi State’s AIChE faculty adviser, was named the national 2014 Outstanding Student Chapter Adviser. This award recognizes an adviser who demonstrates remarkable service and leadership while guiding the activities of AIChE students.

Both awards were presented this month during the AIChE annual student conference and meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

Elmore said MSU’s AIChE chapter seeks to promote student success in scholarship, leadership and service while fostering strong relationships among the students and faculty.

“Pursuit of our mission elevates the chemical engineering program’s identity among current and prospective chemical engineering students,” Elmore said. “In addition to the many service and outreach activities hosted by our AIChE student chapter, we hold several signature events each year.”

Among the most popular AIChE events, Elmore lists the AIChE Homecoming tailgate and the AIChE Spring Release golf scramble and crawfish boil, which offer students the chance to socialize and work with their peers outside the classroom.

AIChE emphasizes community service and outreach by participating in local projects with Habitat for Humanity, the Palmer Children’s Home Thrift Store and Starkville Parks and Recreation.

Last spring, AIChE hosted two events with the Society of Women Engineers to promote female involvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related fields for local elementary and middle school students and Girl Scouts.

“Through the Hunter Henry Chair and AIChE endowments, we have the resources and privilege of contributing to the growth and imagination of future engineers in a fun, active-learning environment,” Elmore said.
