NSF fellowship recipient

March 6, 2007

Congratulations to computer engineering major, Wesley Holland, for being awarded a three-year Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

Holland, 20, is a graduating senior at Mississippi State University. He received the NSF Fellowship after deciding to pursue graduate studies, beginning in fall 2007, for a continued education in computer engineering. Holland plans to pursue his interests in embedded systems and digital design with Yogi Dandass, PhD, as his advisor.

The NSF Graduate Fellowship is one of the most sought after fellowships because of the high rewards it entails. Along with paying for tuition throughout the duration of his graduate experience (up to three year), Holland will also receive a $30,000 annual stipend. Holland says he hopes to complete his master’s degree with enough time remaining to get a start on his doctorate before the end of his fellowship term.

After graduation, Holland aspires to enter the design industry. He included that he may pursue teaching later on at the university level.

“Literally hundreds of man-hours were spent on applying for this fellowship,” said Holand. “And not even half were my own.

Holland also continued to graciously thank his friends, family and MSU faculty who assisted him in the application process.

The Florence, Miss. native has definitely made his mark during his time at MSU. He is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Association of Computing Machinery, Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Advisory Council, Mortarboard and Phi Kappa Phi honors fraternity. He has also received numerous scholarships, including the prestigious, Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which is only given to approximately 200 students nationwide each year. Holland has also been initiated into both the MSU and Bagley College of Engineering Student Hall of Fame. These honors are just to name a few.
