Greetings and Happy New Year!

Thanks to our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends’ hard work, we’ve had many achievements to celebrate this past year. Two recent accomplishments that have taken place in the past month include the Mississippi State football team winning the NCAA AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Next came the National Science Foundation’s (NSF), report that lists the rankings of research and development expenditures (R&D), from universities and colleges for 2006. Mississippi State University ranked 86th, out of 640 institutions in the U.S. who reported research expenditures.

Among the top 100 engineering colleges, the NSF ranked the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering 41st in the nation for R&D expenditures in engineering. The rankings of the other SEC schools are as follows:

18- University of Florida
38- University of Tennessee (all campuses)
41- MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
43- University of Kentucky
46- LSU (all campuses)
58- Vanderbilt
60- Auburn
76- University of South Carolina
89- University of Arkansas

This ranking is a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication. Congratulations, I look forward to working with you as we advance the BCoE to new heights of recognition that it notably deserves.

Best regards;

Glenn Steele, Ph.D., P.E.
Interim Dean

That’s right, it’s time for E-Week, a chance to celebrate all things engineering and determine who is the “best” of the best. The week of February 18, the eight departments of the BCoE will come together in fun, fellowship and the spirit of competition to test their engineering ingenuity against one another. Students resolute in having a successful 2008

For better or worse, January marks a time of reflection, refreshment and, of course, resolutions. Students, especially, become reawakened during this month because in addition to kicking off a new year, it also sees the start of a new semester. While the new year doesn’t necessarily wipe the slate clean for students, it does offer an opportunity for renewed focus, added ambition and New Year’s resolutions. Click here to read more.

Shooting for two

Just a few years ago, students at Mississippi State’s men’s basketball games could be heard chanting for Seth Cannon to shoot for two. While that phrase translated into points on the hardwood, in the world of academics, it took on an entirely new meaning. Click here to read more.

Alumni Spotlight: Lasting impressions spark alumni involvement

As a 1941 graduate of Mississippi State, James Forbes might not have many mementos left from his college days, but lasting memories of being a struggling student still evoke strong emotions. He easily recalls a desire to go to college and how loans from family and friends allowed him to overcome the economic trials that gripped post-depression era Mississippi. Click here to read more.
