Duct tape, eggs and rolling mattresses... Oh my!

Duct tape, eggs and mattresses
on wheels?

That’s right, it’s time for E-Week, a chance to celebrate all things engineering and determine who is the “best” of the best. The week of February 18, the eight departments of the BCoE will come together in fun, fellowship and the spirit of competition to test their engineering ingenuity against one another.

“I love E-Week because it is a fun way for all of us in engineering to get together,” said Jackie Bickel, a junior in ISE. “If you have morning classes you can spend all afternoon de-stressing. Even if you don’t compete, you can still come to watch and cheer for your department. This year should be really fun since almost everyone wants to end aerospace’s winning streak.”

Taking place each spring, E-Week offers students a break from their textbooks while engaging them in engineering friendly competitions. The competitions, which are planned by the Engineering Student Council (ESC), are designed to allow teams from each department to earn points. After the competitive games are completed, the department with the most accumulated points is named the “Best (Engineering) Major on Campus.”

“For the competitions, we are keeping a lot of the old favorites, but with the freshmen planning an event or two there will be some surprises,” explained Bickel, president of the ESC. “We are also looking into adding some activities that will help enhance the E-Week spirit among the BCoE community.”

Students from each department can take part in events every afternoon during the week that range from an egg drop to the E-lympics to a photo scavenger hunt. A perennial favorite, the “PI” throw, allows students to purchase pies to be tossed at willing faculty and staff. All proceeds will benefit the ESC. In the spirit of unity, there will be a Wednesday afternoon cook-out. Everyone is invited to attend.

“This is a great and relaxing way for everyone to get together. Alumni are welcome to come enjoy the cook-out and watch the activities,” Bickel noted. “Even though they can’t compete, it’s a great chance to see what’s going on in the college or support their department. They can also help sponsor events through donations, even if it is just $10 for supplies.”

Bickel added that each year’s events help bring students from all levels together as they try to notch a win for their department. No doubt going into this year’s E-Week one thought will dominate the competitors’ minds. Will aerospace engineering extend its winning streak and soar to a fifth consecutive title, or will another major emerge to clip their wings?
