Outstanding teachers are demanding but fair, clearly communicating their expectations for students and holding students to these expectations. Outstanding teachers challenge students at all levels in their classrooms and encourage collaborative learning among their students. Outstanding teachers engage in active assessment of the learning of their students and seek to improve their teaching to ensure even greater student learning in the future.

Kari received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, all in industrial engineering from MSU. She was on the Dean’s List for Teaching Effectiveness ten times while at Virginia Tech. Kari has also participated in many outreach activities over her years as a faculty member encouraging high school students, particularly women to pursue careers in engineering. Dr. Adrienne Minerick is an assistant professor in the Swalm School of Chemical Engineering and has been at MSU since 2003. Adrienne received her B.S. in chemical engineering from Michigan Tech University and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, also in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Adrienne has been an active member of the American Society for Engineering Education serving in several leadership roles in the New Engineering Educators Division, the Chemical Engineering Division and the Women in Engineering Division. Adrienne also served as a Co-PI on an NSF funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program and has received an NSF CAREER award. Dr. J. Edward Swan II is an associate professor in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at MSU. Ed came to MSU in 2004 after serving seven years at the Naval Research Laboratory as a scientist. Ed received his B.S. degree in computer science from Auburn University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, also in computer science, from Ohio State University. Ed has served as PI on two funded research grants related to teaching. He has helped to develop several new courses in the computer science curriculum and has taught many professional tutorials to other researchers in his field. Dr. Filip To is an associate professor in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department at MSU. Filip joined the faculty in 1988. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Mississippi State. Filip has served as the faculty advisor for the Synthetic Biology Club, which has won awards in the last three years at the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition. He was also instrumental in the biological engineering pilot testing of the college’s laptop requirement.
