Based on our many years of experience with our laptop requirements, we do not recommend students purchase laptops until mid-June June or early-July. This provides adequate time to order and receive the laptop. Students who are transferring from another institution are only required to meet the computer requirements in effect at the time they were freshmen. ________________________________________________ For the last few years the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University has been exploring ways we could enhance the computer skills of our graduates. Studies by prestigious organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Engineering have found that engineering graduates need to have excellent computer skills and be comfortable with using the technology. While all of our students gain significant experience in using computers to solve engineering problems, the national studies indicate that recent graduates need to be better prepared in using the computer for tasks such as word processing, email, presentations, and other similar tasks. These office productivity skills are essential to being a successful engineer. Employers we have discussed this with agree. After a thorough study of various methods to enhance computer skills, the College of Engineering decided that each student should have unrestricted access to his or her own computer. This computer should be available to them 24 hours a day; should be customized to reflect their preferences; and should be integrated into their everyday lives. Computer labs can not provide this type of access. Effective with the Fall 1999 semester, all entering freshmen were required to have a personal computer that meets or exceeds certain minimum specifications. All students, freshmen through seniors, in Mechanical Engineering are required to have computers. Each department has been allowed as much freedom as possible in integrating computers into their curricula; some have chosen to encourage computer use in class, others are relying more on using computers outside class. The majority of the departments have opted to require students to have a laptop computer. Laptop computers not only make it possible for students to use computers in class, but they also make collaborative projects easier and facilitate the formation of study groups.
