The mission of the MSU Graduate School is to:
- provide graduate students advanced academic study beyond the baccalaureate;
- provide graduate students opportunities in which to develop methods of independent and systematic investigation; and
- provide graduate students and faculty with an environment conducive to learning and scholarly activities.

 Grad Spotlight
Dr. Mona Shelton knows education. No, she wasn’t an education major. Nor does she research pedagogy or work in administration. She simply loves to learn, which is partly what brought her to the Bagley College of Engineering.
“I’ve probably never stopped taking some type of class, so I’ve taken a lot of different courses at different places,” Shelton confessed. “When I decided to use distance education to get a doctorate in industrial engineering I knew I wanted a program that was ABET accredited because you don’t want to get a degree if it’s not going to be worth anything. At the time there were only two programs to choose from and Mississippi State had a broader range of courses, a wider range of areas to pursue.”
Shelton opted to pursue a degree via distance after earning her master’s through a more traditional route—night and weekend classes at a university close to her Texas home. She admits that between driving to campus and finding a parking spot, she spent more time in her car than in class. The BCoE-Learning program provided a solution by allowing the working mother to earn her doctorate at her own pace, from the comfort of her own home. Click here to read more.
