William P. Cleveland, double majoring in aerospace engineering and computer engineering, has been awarded the Foglesong Scholarship from the engineering society Tau Beta Pi. Cleveland will receive a $2,000 award which he is applying towards a summer research program in Brussels, Belgium at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.

Congratulations to Mary C. Emplaincourt, an instructor in mechanical engineering, for receiving Mississippi State’s 2008 Faculty Irvin Atly Jefcoat Excellence in Advising award.

Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering (BCoE) introduces a new member to the dean’s advisory council this month. Marc Paganini joins the dean’s advisory council as the newest and one of only a few select non-alumnus member.

Butler Hall
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is housed in Butler Hall, a campus building that was renovated for the department's use in 1990. It is the only academic department housed in Butler Hall. On the first floor, there is also a computing laboratory that is open to the entire campus. The classrooms are equipped with projection systems that allow the instructor to project the classroom PC's screen to a large screen that can be viewed by all of the students. There is a tap at each seat that allows students to plug their laptops into the network. Butler Hall contains state-of-the-art teaching labs that support instruction in courses from introductory to advanced programming as well as specialized areas such as computer security, computer forensics, software engineering, distributed computing, computer graphics, and visualization.
Research
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has five primary research focus areas: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Security, High-Performance Computing, Software Engineering, and Visualization and Computer Graphics. Faculty members conduct research projects that are funded by a variety of industrial, state, and federal funding sources. This work is supported by state-of-the-art equipment in the research laboratories located in Butler Hall as well as facilities that are available in various on-campus research centers with which the faculty collaborate.
Students
The software engineering, computer science, and computer engineering students are active in the student chapters of professional organizations such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE Computer Society. A few years ago, the ACM chapter won the national ACM Outstanding Chapter Activities Award for a tic-tac-toe finite state machine that they built using about 6,000 K'nex building blocks. This machine continues to be a big hit at MSU's Discovery Days.
