BCoE students honored with graduate awards

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Bagley College of Engineering students earned recognition for academic excellence at an annual graduate student awards banquet.

Mississippi State University’s Graduate Student Association Awards recognize students for their work in teaching, research and service. Of this year’s 30 award recipients, 12 honorees were engineering graduate students who earned hall of fame honors, graduate assistant awards and competition awards.

Among the event’s biggest winners, doctoral candidate Tanmay Bhowmik was named the Donald Zacharias Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year. This was the second consecutive year for a Bagley College student to earn this recognition.

Award recipients from the Bagley College of Engineering include (by hometown):

BANGLADESH – Tanmay Bhowmik, a doctoral student in computer science, was named the Donald Zacharias Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year.

CHINA – Laibao Zhang, a master’s student in chemical engineering, won first place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Poster Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for the entry “Temperature and Time Effect on the Physical and Chemical Properties of Pyrolysis Oil.”

COUPEVILLE, Wash. – Amanda J. Sterling, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, won second place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Poster Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for her entry “Process Defect and Fatigue Behavior of 3-D printed Ti-6Al-4V.”

INDIA – Anuyah Gottipati, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering, was named a Graduate School Hall of Fame Scholar. Mukti Patel, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, was named the grand champion of the 3 Minute Thesis Competition for her entry “Designing Third Generation Steel for Future Ground Vehicles.”

IRAN – Ashkan Khalili, a doctoral student in aerospace engineering, won first place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Oral Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for his entry “Wavelet Spectral Finite Element Based User-Defined Element in ABAQUAS for Modeling Delamination in Composite Beams.” Bahareh Kokabian, a doctoral student in civil engineering, won first place in the Life and Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Poster Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for his entry “Nutrient Removal Biocathodes in Microbial Desalination Cells.”

MEADVILLE – Gabe Monroe, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, won second place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Oral Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for his entry “Energy Harvesting via Ferrofluidic Induction.”

NEPAL – Rakish Shrestha, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, won third place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Poster Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for his entry “Effects of Strain-Control and Load-Control Modes on the Fatigue Behavior of PEEK and Fatigue Life Modeling.”

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jamel H. Alexander, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, won third place in the Physics and Computations Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Oral Presentation category of the Graduate Research Symposium for his entry “Smart Carbon Nanotube/Fiber Reinforced Composites for Sensing Applications.”

OCEAN SPRINGS – Kevin Bennett, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering, was named a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow.

PORTERVILLE – Sara Fast, a master’s student in civil and environmental engineering, won the People’s Choice Award in the 3 Minute Thesis Competition for her entry “Photocatalytic Removal of EDCs and PPCPs from Wastewater.”
