Students awarded IEEE Power and Energy Society scholarships

January 29, 2016

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Two Bagley College of Engineering students were recently awarded scholarships by a national energy society.

Juniors Derek Schulte and Dylan Sewell, both majoring in electrical engineering, received scholarships from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society. These awards recognize students who have excelled in academics and demonstrate a drive for the industry.

“The award not only helps to fund my education, but it also opens up many career opportunities for me, such as co-op and internship positions, as well as research opportunities,” said Schulte, a native of Meridian. “It also gives me access to mentors who can help guide me in pursuing a career in the power and energy industry.”

Sewell, a Petal native, was named as a John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar, which requires the honoree to be participating in a co-op program.

“Having a co-op job will push my graduation date back,” said Sewell. “The funding helps a lot because my current scholarships may run out before I finish school.”

The IEEE Power and Energy Society works to progress the electrical power field through technology, development and education. For more information on the society, visit www.ieee-pes.org.
