International institute honors ECE professor

January 29, 2009

Dr. Stanislaw Grzybowski, director of the High Voltage Laboratory and conferee of the Mississippi Power Professorship in the department of electrical and computer engineering at Mississippi State, was honored by Chongqing University with the “Guest Professor” award during the institution’s 80th anniversary ceremony. Grzybowski was one of five scholars bestowed with the honorary title distinction for his work on China’s National 111 innovation project. The Ministry of Education and the Chinese State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs developed the project in order to create a collaborative between Chinese and international experts to evaluate and enhance the insulation performance of ultra-high voltage power systems.

“From more than 700 Chinese universities, Chongquing University was one of only 39 higher educational institutions granted the project,” said Grzybowski. “The invitation and my involvement in the project stems from a valued professional collaboration and friendship I’ve maintained with Professor Caixin Sun, team leader of the 111 project, for many years.”

Grzybowski, an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Life Fellow, and his colleague, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, share another commonality; both are leaders of high voltage engineering at their respected universities and have compared academic and research findings. A collaborative that has proven successful for the two academicians and their students.

“Two Chongqing University professors spent a year studying at the MSU High Voltage Laboratory as visiting professors,” said Grzybowski. “Faculty members from both universities have co-authored several journal papers and collaborated on many international conference presentations. And several graduate level students from Chongqing University come here to study at MSU’s High Voltage Laboratory.”

Mississippi State and Chongqing University are organizing the 2010 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE’2010), which will be held in New Orleans, La., October 11-14. The ICHVE’2010 is the second ICHVE conference and follows ICHVE’2008, which was organized in Chongqing, China. Grzybowski is serving as the ICHVE’2010 conference chair.
