Hello, future Bulldogs!

Summer is HERE! This year is flying by and Fall 2021 will be here before we know it.

For our Fall 2021 incoming freshmen and transfer students, we are ecstatic to be seeing you during orientation and look forward to welcoming you home in August!

For our Fall 2021 rising seniors and transfer students, the time is NOW to be in preparation for applying for Fall or Spring 2022.

Below are updates to keep you in the know about the BCoE and what to expect:

  1. Are you a Fall 2021 student that missed Academic Insight? It’s not too late to visit with us to help make you decision.
  2. Orientation sign-up opened up on March 1, 2021. This is how you confirm your attendance to MSU. There are still spots available! To find out more information about Orientation, please visit the Orientation and Events website.
  3. Housing - If you need housing and have not applied, you need to do that as soon as you can. Online room selection was in May; however, there is still room for you!
  4. Be sure to keep a look out on my MSU Instagram account @msstatejoy – I will be updating over the summer with virtual events to get you excited for Fall 2021 and beyond!
  5. Have you visited campus? I encourage you to schedule a visit with the Bagley College of Engineering to hear all that we have to offer you as a student. Book your campus visit NOW!
  6. Can’t make it to campus, but want to chat with me anyway? I am hosting Cowbell Chats every weekday this summer starting in May. These chats are available to all incoming Fall 2021 students and Fall 2022 (and beyond) prospective students. This allows students and families 30 minute one-on-one sessions.

I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing all of you on campus soon!

Stay safe, be well, and Hail State!

Fast Fact from the Dean

“An article published by Aerospace Engineering faculty Jack Tian and his group was recently highlighted by Science Advances journal. This work brings an acoustic-based method to deliver DNA into human stem cells more rapidly, at less cost, and with less cell damage than previous approaches. It is a step toward a better way to make gene therapies to attack cancer and genetic disorders.”

Hope Yeager

Hope Yeager

"Even before touring other schools, I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”

She’s a long way from Sugar Land, Texas, but Hope Yeager would not have it any other way. As a senior in Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Astronautics, Hope knew pretty early in her childhood that she wanted to be an engineer. It is not uncommon for students to know they want to be engineers, but deciding on which discipline can be a little tricky. In her words, Hope explains how she decided Aerospace Engineering was for her:

“I knew pretty early on in grade school that I wanted to be an engineer, but I hadn’t quite narrowed it down to which type until my junior year of high school. I got the opportunity to take a physics based engineering class, and we did a project that had some aerospace ties, and I fell in love. I applied that summer for school as an ASE student, and I’m so happy that I stuck with it.”

A fair question to ask would be, “How did a student from Texas decide on Mississippi State University and the Bagley College of Engineering?” Well, Hope provided insight into her decision:

“Being in band, it was important to me to pick an SEC school so I could attend some good football games with the marching band. I applied to Mississippi State because the aerospace program was ranked well, and when I came to campus for the first time to audition for band, I fell in love. Even before touring other schools, I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. I wholeheartedly believed that I found my home, and boy was I right!”

A lot students question whether you can be a part of the Famous Maroon Band and be an engineering student, and Hope is proof that you can do both and thrive. Not only is she a member of the Famous Maroon Band, but she is an Engineering Recruitment Leader and a member of Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity. It is doable to have a life outside of engineering.

MSU project highlighted in 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase

A Mississippi State University project examining the role of culture in encouraging women to pursue engineering fields is being highlighted this week [May 11-18] as part of the National Science Foundation-funded 2021 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for All Video Showcase.

Two faculty members and a graduate student in MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering shared a presentation titled “Impact of Culture on Women’s Choice of Engineering Majors.” The presentation is based on NSF-funded research conducted by aerospace engineering professor Rani W. Sullivan, electrical and computer engineering assistant professor Jean Mohammadi-Aragh and engineering education doctoral student Soundouss Sassi.
