Muthukumarappan “Kumar” Ramurthy

Dr. Muthukumarappan “Kumar” Ramurthy is a Strategic Energy Executive and Technology Founder with over 25 years of experience driving multi-billion dollar outcomes through technical innovation across the U.S. unconventional oil and gas sector. His career spans technical, operational, and C-suite leadership roles. Currently an Executive MBA candidate at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Dr. Ramurthy specializes in integrating digital transformation and global strategy into the energy sector.

Dr. Ramurthy currently serves as a Technology Founder and Strategic Advisor, working on commercializing “Frac-Protect,” a proprietary methodology designed to preserve PDP production and optimize reservoir pressure management during new well stimulation.

From 2020 to 2025, Dr. Ramurthy served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Bayswater Exploration & Production, where he developed a production optimization digital platform delivering the highest-performing pads in DJ Basin history for Bayswater and enabling a $603M asset sale (2025). As a member of the Investment Committee, he played a key role in evaluating acquisitions and mitigating portfolio risk.

Prior to Bayswater, Dr. Ramurthy spent over two decades at Halliburton, rising to Director of Technology, North America. He led more than 300 plus field engineers during the early-rapid expansion of horizontal drilling, pioneered industry-shaping technologies such as Simul-frac and the first one to introduce DFIT in shales, the pre-dominant form of pressure-transient testing in shales. He was part of the Joint Technical Team (JTT) that kickstarted the multi-billion dollar Bakken play.

Dr. Ramurthy holds four U.S. patents, has authored 17 technical papers, and co-authored two industry textbooks. He has served in multiple SPE leadership roles and sits on the SPE International Completions Award Committee. He holds a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering and is completing his Executive MBA at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Dr. Ramurthy has two daughters; serves as an advisory board member with the Petroleum Engineering Department at MSU and volunteers at the SV Temple of Colorado.
