Burke Scholarships Available for the Grenoble Engineering Summer Study Abroad Program

As a result of the generous support of Fred and Sara Jean Burke, the Bagley College of Engineering (BCoE) is offering a number of scholarships for the Summer Study Abroad Program in Grenoble, France. The Burkes’ generosity allows us to reduce the cost of the program overall, as well as offer scholarships that fully covers the Program Cost for one student and covers more than half of the Program Cost for a number of other students. Awards will be based on financial need, grade-point average, participation in broader campus activities, and demonstrated leadership.

The Program Cost includes roundtrip airfare, course fees and lodging in Grenoble, lodging the night before the return to U.S., transportation to/from MSU and Jackson airport, 4-day Eurail pass, travel insurance, transport pass in Grenoble. Originally, the Program Cost was estimated to be $4,500 per student. However, due to the Burkes’ funding, the Program Cost has been reduced to $3,500 per student and with the scholarships the Program Cost is $0 for one student and reduced to $1,500 for the other scholarship recipients. The Program Cost does not include 6 credit hours of MSU tuition, meals, and expenses during two weeks of independent travel.

Applications to the program and for the scholarships are due by 5 p.m. Monday, March 26.

Students will take two courses at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), one of Europe’s leading technology universities. Grenoble is a major scientific center located in the heart of the Alps. Everyone will take a French Language/Culture course (MSU’s FLF 1113, 1123, 2133, or 2143 depending upon student’s proficiency), which is considered a MSU humanities core course. Students will also choose one of the following five Engineering/Science courses: Low and High Temperature Fuel Cells, Signal and Digital Image Processing, Production and Inventory Planning and Project Management, Recent Advances in Analytical Chemistry, Introduction to Functional Programming in Scheme and Object-Oriented Programming in JAVA.

The program begins June 4 with 7 days of French language instruction at MSU. The group travels to Grenoble on June 14. The following week involves intensive language training in Grenoble. The engineering/science classes begin June 25 and continue for three weeks. During this time additional language training will be provided along with a mini-course on French culture. The program ends in Grenoble on July 13. The students then have two weeks for independent travel before returning to the U.S. on July 28.

Courses are taught in English by French faculty. However, MSU engineering professor Dr. Judy Schneider (ME) will accompany the students. Lodging while in Grenoble will be in Residence Hall between campus and downtown.
