Nick Chambers and Mark Dickey, students in Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering, have been named Alex Charter Student Scholars by the Hypervelocity Impact Society. As two of only five students selected from the United States, they have been invited to attend the Hypervelocity Impact Symposium in Virginia.
The Hypervelocity Impact Society is an international organization devoted to the advancement of the science and technology of hypervelocity impact required to facilitate an understanding of the phenomena. The organization holds biannual symposiums to assist in the development and exchange of technical information and research. They began the Alex Charter Student Scholar program to allow students the opportunity to participate in the society. Eleven students were selected to participate this year including six from outside the United States.
As part of this honor, the society will cover the recipients’ registration, travel and lodging costs for the weeklong event. Chambers, of Meridian, Miss., and Dickey, of Houma, La., were selected from an international pool of applicants based on their background, research and work interest in hypervelocity impact.
Chambers, a graduate student in Aerospace engineering, received his degree from Mississippi State in May and completed research on the impact of debris on the International Space Station. During his time at the Bagley College of Engineering he has participated in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other student organizations. As a graduate student, he will be completing research for the Hypervelocity Impact Lab at MSU.
Dickey, a senior, is working to complete his degree in engineering after being on active duty with the U.S. Air Force for ten years. During his time with the Air Force, he worked in aircraft maintenance and explosives demolition. He recently competed with a team from MSU in a NASA sponsored rocketry competition.
