Starkville,MS— The Bagley College of Engineering’s Bill and Carolyn Cobb Chair and Head of Aerospace Engineering, Anthony J. Vizzini, is the newly named president-elect of the American Society for Composites (ASC). Dr. Vizzini has been a member of the society since 1987 and was named an ASC Fellow in 2004.
The 200-member organization is an all-volunteer group of dedicated professionals in academia, industry, national laboratories, and federal agencies. Established in 1985, ASC promotes the understanding and application of composite materials and provides a forum for the engineering and scientific communities in composites. As a result of their research, almost every industry uses some form of composite material application to make products lightweight and more versatile. For instance, many medical implants are made from composite materials, as well as golf clubs, tennis rackets, automotive parts, and high voltage utility poles. The aerospace industry uses composite materials to build planes that are lightweight, durable, strong, and energy efficient, such as the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Vizzini will serve as president-elect for two years, beginning in 2008, followed by a two-year presidential term. He will then serve two years as a past president. In addition to his presidential responsibilities, Vizzini also is serving as general chair of the 23rd ASC Technical Conference to be held in Memphis, Tenn., in September 2008.
