STARKVILLE, Miss. – Dr. Noel Schulz, an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering, has earned the designation of being one of Mississippi State’s outstanding women.
Named the Outstanding Faculty Women for 2008, Schulz was honored at the recent outstanding woman awards hosted by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW). This award recognizes the success of a tenured, faculty woman who is dedicated to enhancing her field and the position of women in higher education.
“I am honored to have received this award and I am humbled to be a member of such a distinguished group of colleagues,” Schulz said. “I continue to be personally enriched by the relationships I have formed with students, faculty, staff and administrators at the university. To be nominated for this award and supported by my colleagues and students is a reward in itself.”
Those who nominate faculty members for this outstanding woman award must write and gather letters of recommendation that show the individual’s devotion to teaching and bettering MSU. Schulz says she is very appreciative that her colleagues took the time to recognize her for this honor.
Schulz began her career as an MSU professor seven years ago. Since that time, she has been active in nominating students, staff, faculty, administrators and community leaders for PCSW awards. She sees the organization as playing a vital role in helping women at Mississippi State continue to move forward.
“I believe that it is essential to have a comprehensive group that can provide suggestions and feedback to the university president on issues of concern for women across campus,” Schulz said.
As an advocate for the advancement of women in engineering, she helped start the Engineering Women Faculty group. This group helps provide networking support for women faculty in the college, as well as with those in the sciences and business. Schulz was also active in helping develop a proposal for the National Science Foundation that would provide funds to aid in the recruitment, retention and advancement of women faculty.
Earlier this year, Schulz, who holds a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, was inducted into the Engineering Academy of Distinguished Teachers. She also holds the Bagley College of Engineering’s TVA endowed professorship in power systems engineering.
The PCSW was founded over thirty years ago to serve the president. Its mission is to inform and advise the president on issues concerning and pertaining to women, both on campus and around the world.
