STARKVILLE, Miss. – A team of civil engineers from the Bagley College of Engineering secured its decade of dominance with a commanding win at the 2015 Deep South Regional Traffic Bowl.

The three-person, Mississippi State University team scored 1,100 points higher than second place-finisher Jackson State University and 2,000 points more than third place-finisher, and in-state rival, the University of Mississippi.

Teams from Mississippi State University have won every Deep South Traffic Bowl since the competition began in 2006.

“This kind of competition is a great way for our students to see how their training and education stacks up against their peers,” Dennis Truax, department head in civil and environmental engineering, said. “It helps them feel prepared and builds their confidence about going into the job market.”

Each year the Jeopardy-style competition is held in conjunction with the Institute of Transportation Engineers Deep South Conference. The student teams, who come from engineering programs across Mississippi and Louisiana, compete in front of an audience of transportation professionals to answer questions on a variety of topics including design concepts, historical issues and policies related to transportation.

As winners of the Deep South regional competition, the Mississippi State team will advance to the Southern district competition in April, which will include top engineering schools from Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

The 2015 Mississippi State University Traffic Bowl team includes (by hometown):

LOUISVILLE – Case Fulcher, son of William and Janet Fulcher, a graduate student in civil engineering

OCEAN SPRINGS – Patrick Rivers, son of Bruce and Millie Rivers, a junior in civil engineering

TUPELO – Heather Hart, daughter of Brian and Jill Hart, a senior in civil engineering.

Part of Mississippi’s flagship research university, the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University houses eight academic departments that offer 11 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree programs. For more information, visit www.bagley.msstate.edu.
