STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Bagley College of Engineering is in the top fourth of online graduate programs nationally according to U.S. News and World Report rankings released Tuesday.
In its first time providing overall rankings for online degree-granting engineering programs, the website lists the Bagley College as 12th among the 50 graduate schools rated. The college’s computer science and electrical and computer engineering degrees are also ranked 12th in a separate listing for online computer information technology programs.
“The newly released ranking is a great achievement for our engineering distance learning program,” said Sarah Rajala, dean of the college. “Our faculty who teach these distance learning courses have gone above and beyond to meet student learning needs with new technologies and tools to reach engineering students across the nation. We can’t thank them enough.”
The University of Southern California earned the top spot on both lists with an overall score of 72.8 in engineering and 68.8 in information technology. It is followed Pennsylvania State University (66.9) and Columbia University (63.2) in on the engineering list, and Sam Houston State (68.6) and Virginia Tech (65.6) in the computer information technology rankings.
Following the Bagley College and its overall 56.1 score on the Best Online Engineering rankings is Virginia Tech (55.9) and Cornell University and Ohio State, both with 55.5. The BCoE’s 55.1 score in Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs is followed by Pace University (55) and Boston University (54.3).
The only other Southeastern Conference school on both lists is Auburn University at No. 6 in engineering, and No. 7 in computer information technology. The University of Arkansas and University of Florida made the engineering list at No. 25 and No. 26, respectively.
U.S. News and World Report first released data on online engineering programs last year by providing rankings of 59 schools in four categories: faculty credentials and training, student engagement and accreditation, student services and technology, and student engagement. This and other statistical information was collected from surveys and questionnaires that were completed by each institution. For this year’s rankings, statistical information was collected from July 2011 to June 2012. The remaining data was compiled in the summer and fall of 2012.
Established in 1933, U.S. News and World Report releases annual rankings of universities and individual academic program from across the country. The most current list ranks Mississippi State at No. 160 among national universities. The Bagley College’s undergraduate program comes in at No. 96 while the graduate program is No. 82.
