BCoE Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering hosts fall 2025 design showcase, announces winners

STARKVILLE, Miss.— Eight groundbreaking projects were presented during the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Design Showcase on Tuesday, December 9.

The showcase, held in the fall and spring semesters, featured teams from the department’s Capstone Design II class. To prepare for the showcase, students applied their knowledge and skills to incorporate appropriate engineering standards, develop designs, test projects, and demonstrate fully functional projects. During the showcase, each team presented its projects to attendees.

The team that placed first in the showcase received the Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award and $1,000. The Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award was made possible through the generous donation of electrical engineer alumnus Ed Blakeslee. All projects and descriptions are listed below, starting with the first- and second-place ties.

First Place/Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award: Deshawn Hill, Trace Hodge, Landon Little, Ira Martin, and Phillip Nguyen with project DOOMSEEK

Project: DOOMSEEK is a robot designed to inspect high-voltage transformers, enabling technicians to perform detailed inspections without physically entering the transformer.

Second Place: Nisha Adhikari, I'Jerius Brown, Liam Cavanaugh, Mary Claret Landsgaard and Matthew Richards with project Free Wheelie

Project: Free Wheelie is a power-assist device for manual wheelchairs, designed to reduce pain and strain from constant self-propulsion. It features a touchscreen user interface and an adjustable arm mechanism that allows users to seamlessly switch between manual and electric modes, providing comfort for daily mobility.

Second Place: Derek Clayton, Mason Doxey, Grant Harper, and Andrey Scroggins with Leaklens

Project: Leaklens is an app that monitors pipes by communicating with them via sensor fusion. In addition to the data-based information, an augmented reality feature allows users to view the pipe layout and see real-time data.

            Additional fall 2025 capstone projects are listed below, in alphabetical order by project title.

Project: Awake-Pilot is an AI-powered driver-monitoring device designed to prevent drowsy-driving accidents by alerting the driver once signs of fatigue are detected and immediately triggering an alert. It uses a small dashboard-mounted camera and radar sensor to track the driver’s eye movements and head motion in real time. The system works day or night by plugging directly into a vehicle’s power port and is built to keep drivers safe.

Project Advisor: John Ball

Project: BetterDome is a construction and mining helmet with integrated safety equipment such as gas and body/ambient temperature detectors. This will work to prevent workplace accidents such as heatstroke and power an active cooling system.

Project: Mr-r Mr-r (pronounced mirror mirror) is a new addition to the smart home device market. Mr-r Mr-r is an AI-integrated smart mirror that presents a digital display, equipped with a touchscreen, that displays widgets such as weather and a customizable calendar.

Project: NetCommand focuses on simplifying network switch configuration through a mobile-accessible platform powered by a Raspberry Pi.

Project: VitalWeave is a health monitoring compression shirt for people suffering from heart conditions. It will work by tracking vitals and notifying users through an app if any anomalies are detected.
