Engineering professor recognized by Alma Mater

February 23, 2006

Lori Mann Bruce, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Mississippi State University, received the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award for the University of Alabama in Huntsville last spring.

Bruce was one of seven UAH graduates selected by a committee established by College of Engineering Dean Jorge Aunon for her contributions to the electrical engineering field. She is a member of the research faculty with the Geospatial Resources Institute at MSU, and her research focuses on advanced feature extraction and automated target recognition methods for remotely sensed images and for medical images.

Bruce’s research in remote sensing has resulted in the use of multi-temporal and hyper-spectral satellite imagery for detecting and tracking the spread of invasive species in the United States. She has also been a forerunner in the design of computer-aided diagnosis for early detection of breast cancer.

Prior to her position at MSU, Bruce was an assistant professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Bruce has taught more than 30 graduate and undergraduate courses in areas such as digital image processing (graduate) and digital devices (undergraduate). She is a member of several professional affiliations, including the Society of Women Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. She has also published numerous journal articles.

Bruce received her bachelor’s degree and her doctorate from UAH in 1991 and 1996, respectively. She earned her master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992, all in electrical engineering.

“Of course any award is exciting to receive, but being honored by your alma mater is especially thrilling,” Bruce said. “I’m especially honored to be in the company of such prestigious past recipients.”

Past recipients of this award include space shuttle astronaut Jan Davis and other honorable engineering professionals.
