History of Women in Engineering Exhibit Now on Display

February 23, 2006

The Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University will be joining the Society of Women Engineers’ celebration of a long history of achievement for women engineers with the Petticoats and Slide Rules traveling exhibit.

Over the past half-century, the SWE has grown in both size and reputation, and broken down barriers that have restricted women in the workplace, especially in a male-dominated field. The exhibit will feature displays highlighting the memorable history of the SWE. It walks through SWE’s development and progress as the first American national, incorporated engineering society dedicated to promoting women. This is the first year that MSU has displayed the exhibit. SWE and the College of Engineering are hosting the event, and Ford Motor Company is providing funding.

“We decided to participate about three years ago and we wanted to have the exhibit during Engineers Week,” said Robert Green, coordinator for the exhibit. “This was the first opportunity we had to get it—there was a pretty long waiting list.” The exhibit will be on display on the third floor of Mitchell Memorial Library through May 19.
