Starkville, Miss. – A professor and chair of computational solid mechanics now holds the highest honor in a second professional society.
Mark Horstemeyer has earned the rank of Fellow in the Materials Information Society, known as ASM International. He earned the same rank from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2006.
He becomes the Bagley College of Engineering’s sixth faculty member to be named a Fellow in two or more professional engineering societies. A form of peer recognition, the rank of Fellow is considered to be one of the highest honors in any professional field.
Horstemeyer came to Mississippi State in 2002 after more than a decade working as an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories in California. After joining the faculty, he quickly began establishing himself as an accomplished researcher and a leader in his field.
His recent accomplishments include being named a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor at MSU and earning the 2011 International Journal of Plasticity Young Research Award. He has also earned Mississippi State’s highest research award, and an achievement award from his former department at Ohio State University. The Society of Automotive Engineering has also awarded Horstemeyer the Teeter Educational Award.
Horstemeyer’s research includes multi-scale modeling and other predictive design technologies. He has been involved in more than $23.5 million in research program development. He holds a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University, a master’s in engineering mechanics from Ohio State University, and a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
According to the organization’s universe community website, ASM International Fellows are nominated and selected based on the member’s sustained high-level of performance; innovative ability to solve problems in the field; ability to develop and direct research; and publication of papers, articles and books.
