Mississippi State University drives to first place in the Deep South Traffic Bowl

April 18, 2025

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State civil engineering students have returned to the top with a recent win at the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Deep South Traffic Bowl.

The event involves teams of three students competing in a Jeopardy-style challenge with questions based on transportation and traffic-related topics. The winning teams receive scholarships.

Since 2006, the MSU team has placed first in 17 of the 20 competitions that have been held since its inception.

Cooper Snell, president of MSU’s ITE chapter, said he was impressed with the team’s win and the hard work that went into it.

“Many Saturday morning practice sessions went into this win, and I am proud of the team, which had two members who were new to the Traffic Bowl,” said Snell, a senior civil engineering major. “Their hard work paid off, and I look forward to seeing us advance to the Southern District next month.”

The team beat the University of Mississippi and the University of Louisiana, Lafayette,

for a spot in the Southern District competition April 13 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Isaac Howard, Director of the Richard A. Rula School for Civil and Environmental Engineering, said that the win was a testament to the incredible talent, dedication, and teamwork within the school, as well as a reflection of the outstanding work the students put into mastering engineering.

“This win reflects the hard work and preparation of the Traffic Bowl team,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see their efforts pay off, and this victory is a significant recognition of their skills as engineers.”

The 2024 Traffic Bowl team includes:

TURKMENISTAN - Tair Masharipov, a senior civil engineering major.

OCEAN SPRINGS - Dylan Greer, a senior civil engineering major.
