MSU wins Best E-Week at Southeast Competition

May 6, 2003

National Engineers Week or E-Week was founded in 1951 by the Society of Professional Engineers to broaden public awareness and appreciation and to encourage pre-college interest in science, mathematics and technology.

Mississippi State University’s Bagley College of Engineering uses this week to celebrate the lives of past engineers and to raise awareness of the school.

This year’s E-Week was especially important because MSU won first place in the Best National Association of Engineering Student Council Engineering Week Southeast Region competition. This award is a first for MSU and for the Bagley College of Engineering. The event took place on Feb. 15-21.

The Engineering Student Council at MSU was required to submit a write-up about the week’s events of the week. This included student/faculty turnouts, significant differences from last year and from other universities and general feelings from the college.

“The events, speakers, competition, and participation was far superior over other schools,” Michael Ellett, president of Engineering Student Council at MSU, said. “Student involvement was great and turn-out was awesome. They made the week, we (Engineering Student Council) did not, they did.”

Ellett said that one thing that set MSU apart from other schools was the fact that it was a weeklong event. Other schools, like South Florida University, only have an E-Day.

“Winning this award is a tremendous accomplishment for the Bagley College of Engineering,” Ellett said. “It could have been done without the Engineering Student Council and the Dean of Engineering’s staff.”

After winning the Southeast Region, MSU will now move along to the National Competition at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas in October.
