Bagley students sweep Mississippi engineering scholarship awards

March 28, 2016

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Bagley College of Engineering students clinched the majority of scholarship awards given by the Mississippi Engineering Society (MES).

In 2016, the MES granted 10 of 12 possible awards to students from Mississippi State.

Robert Green, undergraduate coordinator for BCoE, says this is indicative of the quality of students at MSU.

“It shows we’ve got students who demonstrate a passion for engineering and a dedication to the profession,” Green said. “It is apparent that Bagley students are interested in pursuing professional careers and making a difference in the world.”

Bagley College’s MES scholarship recipients are (by hometown):

BRANDON, Miss. – Jeri Grantham, a senior mechanical engineering major, and Jordan King, a junior petroleum and chemical engineering major

CLINTON, Miss. – Civil engineering senior, Alexander Bohannon

COLUMBIANA, Ala. – Emily Mealins, a senior biological engineering major

ELLISVILLE, Miss. – Junior Jeff Steinwinder, a civil and environmental engineering major

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Civil engineering junior, Jack Gratwick

PASCAGOULA, Miss. – Chad Carlson, a junior petroleum engineering major

PORT GIBSON, Miss. – Senior Jonathan Dowell, a mechanical engineering major

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Electrical engineering junior, Christopher King

WESSON, Miss. – Danny Lowery Jr., a senior civil engineering major

To qualify for MES scholarships, engineering students must demonstrate additional financial need to graduate and be a citizen of the United States and preferably a citizen of Mississippi. Students must also be enrolled as either a last semester junior or a senior undergraduate student in an accredited engineering program at one of Mississippi’s institutions of higher learning.

Green stated that other ways to stand out among other MES applicants includes being well-rounded, having good grades, participating in community service, being involved in professional organizations, desiring to become a licensed professional engineer and having leadership experience.

Since 2005, MES has awarded over $136,000 in financial assistance to qualified undergraduate students enrolled in the engineering curriculum at accredited colleges of engineering in Mississippi.
