MealinsE_WEBSTARKVILLE, Miss. – A statewide engineering organization has named a Bagley student as this year’s Outstanding Senior.

Senior Emily Mealins, a biological engineering major from Chelsea, Alabama, was honored by the Mississippi Engineering Society as this year’s recipient at the annual conference in Jackson on February 26, 2016.

As one of the highest honors bestowed to engineering students, the Outstanding Engineering Senior Award is given to a student who excels in academics, leadership and service, while also demonstrating professionalism in the field of engineering.

In addition to a BCoE education, Mealins has gained engineering expertise through an internship with Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure in Asheville, North Carolina, and on-campus work with water systems. She is currently working on the development of a preventative solution to high iron content in backwash discharge water in small drinking water systems.

“My internship for Amec Foster Wheeler allowed me to gain a lot of experience working in a professional environment with successful engineers,” Mealins stated. “But this experience on campus has given me the opportunity to do a project on my own and apply what I’ve learned in the past.”

With a wide range of interests, Mealins has enhanced her college experience by also working with MSU’s Study Abroad office and earning a minor in Spanish. She has served as founder and president of the MSU’s student chapter of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and is an active member in her sorority, Kappa Delta.

Mealins has demonstrated leadership skills at MSU through roles such as MSU Spanish Club treasurer, the Global Health Brigades vice president of language and culture, MSU Foundation Ambassador, and Society of Women Engineers secretary. She has also earned numerous awards including Presidents List, BCoE Student Hall of Fame, International Institute Global Fellow inductee and Simrall Award nominee.

Upon graduating, Mealins plans to pursue a career in environmental engineering with a focus on water resources.

“Receiving this award really encourages me and makes me more motivated to pursue my professional engineering status,” Mealins said. “My time here at MSU has also allowed me to make great connections, gain memorable experiences and really shape my college experience around what is best for me, and I love MSU for that.”
