BCoE associate dean named to CDC council

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Kari Babski-Reeves, associate dean for research and graduate studies at Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering, has been invited to participate on the Center for Disease Control’s National Occupational Research Agency (NORA) Musculoskeletal Health Council.
Babski-Reeves is also a professor of industrial and systems engineering, with a research focus in the areas of human factors, ergonomics and safety.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me,” Babksi-Reeves said. “I’ve been writing proposals to NIOSH since I graduated with my PhD, and now I get to be a part of the group that helps set the research agenda for the next 10 years.”
The council is a cross-sector program formed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), an initiative of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As one of seven cross-sector councils, the NORA Musculoskeletal Health Council directly focuses on preventing disorders pertaining to soft-tissue injuries caused by repetitive motion, force or vibration.
“Changes in the workplace to reduce various injuries and illnesses will be the direct result of what the group identifies as the critical occupational research priorities. This will ultimately drive what research is funded by NIOSH and other government agencies,” Babski-Reeves said.
Since its creation in 1996, NORA has acted as a research framework for NIOSH and the nation. With members from academia, industry, labor and government, NORA councils provide guidance to the occupational safety and health community as they turn research into workplace practice.
