STARKVILLE, Miss. – An electrical and computer engineering professor marked the end of the semester with two Bagley College awards denoting outstanding achievement.

Billie J. Ball endowed professor Jim Fowler received the 2014 career and faculty research awards from the Bagley College of Engineering.

“These awards are singular distinctions in light of the vast amount of high-quality research and teaching activities taking place within the college,” Fowler said. “I am indescribably pleased and honored to be recognized among my colleagues in this capacity.”

With a focus on signal and imaging processing, Fowler’s research aims to develop tiny sensors that are energy efficient and cheap to produce.

During his 17-year career at MSU, Fowler has received more than $5.6 million in research funding from groups such as NASA, the National Science Foundation and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Fowler’s publication record of 40 journal papers, four book chapters, four accepted journal articles, 47 referred conference papers, 37 other conference papers, and more than 80 conference proceedings has resulted in 15 professional awards and international recognition.

Fowler currently serves as associate editor for two of the industry’s most esteemed image processing journals and as chair or co-chair for three international conferences.

In his role as graduate program director for the electrical and computer engineering department, Fowler advises more than 90 graduate and doctoral students. He has been recognized for his work on campus with honors such as Hearin Distinguished Professor and MSU StatePride Faculty Award. He has been honored three times for outstanding research paper from the Bagley College and his department.

Since becoming a part of the Bulldog family in 1997, Fowler has worked as a postdoctoral researcher and visiting professor at three universities in France. He also has professional experience as a computer programmer for companies such as the Ohio Department of Transportation and AT&T.

Fowler holds master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Ohio State University, where he worked as an instructor and graduate research associate. He earned a bachelor’s degree from OSU in computer and information science engineering.

The Career Award is presented each year by the Bagley College to a faculty member with more than 15 years experience at Mississippi State who has excelled in teaching, research and service to the college. The BCoE research awards are designed to recognize students, faculty and staff for their accomplishments in research and other creative endeavors. Honorees are selected from a pool of nominees for contributing significantly to Mississippi State University’s mission of research.
