STARKVILLE, Miss.— After more than 30 years of active membership in the nation’s largest engineering education organization, a Bagley College of Engineering (BCoE) professor received recognition for outstanding service.
At an April meeting, Dr. B.K. Hodge, TVA Professor of Energy Systems and a William Giles Distinguished Professor in mechanical engineering, received the 2009 Tony Tillman Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Education Southeast Section (ASEE SE.)
Hodge joined ASEE shortly after he came to Mississippi State as an assistant professor. Since that time, he has moved up the faculty ranks while taking on numerous leadership roles with the organization. He has served as section president and mechanical engineering division chair at the national level. In 2006 he was inducted as a Fellow of the ASEE. As an author, he has four ASEE award winning papers to his credit. Additionally, he has served as chair of a number of committees including one charged with rewriting the section’s constitution and bylaws.
“ASEE SE has the reputation of being the most active section of the organization,” Hodge said. “To be recognized with the Tony Tillman Service Award from the Southeast Section is personally both satisfying and humbling—satisfying because the award indicates that my contributions to the section have been recognized and humbling because I am aware of the many contributions of the previous award winners.”
The organization’s Web site explains that the Tillman Service Award recognizes individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the section. All members of the 10-state southeast section are eligible, but must be nominated by an ASEE member. The award has been presented annually since 2002 with past winners representing organizations, such as the University of Tennessee, Virginia Tech and the Citadel.
ASEE is the nation’s largest engineering education organization. With more than 12,000 members from 400 engineering institutions, it strives to promote instruction, research, public service, and leadership.
