Bryan named Outstanding Administrative Secretary

STARKVILLE, Miss. –Outstanding office assistants, such as Laura Bryan, who works in the undergraduate coordinator’s office at the Bagley College of Engineering, are priceless because they create the positive, first impressions of an institution. That’s why the President’s Commission on the Status of Women named Bryan the 2009 Outstanding Secretarial/Clerical Woman.

Bryan’s support, service position is the backbone of the college. Working in an office environment that provides the student, recruitment support for the eight departments within the engineering college, Bryan’s professional demeanor and social interactions have a very real impact on the college’s student enrollment levels. Very often, Bryan is the first BCoE ambassador that a student or parent will meet and her fine-tuned ability to professionally manage deadlines for multiple projects in the middle of what may be the only and first time a parent and student visit the college has a very positive impact on the BCoE’s reputation.

Her role includes recruiting students, awarding scholarships, registering students for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, working with educational representatives from Region V and State Science Fairs, handling course adds and drops, while simultaneously making guests and colleagues feel their interests are the most important items on her agenda is what sets the college’s positive office culture and keeps the recruitment offices running efficiently.

Bryan’s commitment to higher education transfers to the community as well, she serves as board member and vice president/co-treasurer for the Starkville Foundation for Public Education and was honored as Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District Parent of the Year by the Starkville School District. In addition, Bryan has served as a board member and treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church child care and has taught pre-school Sunday school for the past 10 years.

In her free time Bryan is an avid tennis player and serves as the Starkville USTA league’s president. She also is very active in managing the Chi Omega sorority house and serving as a mentor to those young women.

Bryan’s exceptional professional skills, work ethic and dedication to volunteer service, in addition to the many accolades she has earned while selflessly giving of her time is why she is the President’s Commission on the Status of Women 2009 Outstanding Secretarial/Clerical Woman.
