Bagley College Staff Member to Serve on National Committee

September 7, 2005

Starkville, Miss. – One of the Bagley College of Engineering’s staff members was chosen to serve on the Education Committee for the Collaborative Large-Scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Program.

The Coordinator for Educational Outreach & Student Programs, Emma Seiler, will attend and participate in the first organizational CLEANER all-hands meeting from Sept. 20-22, 2005 at the NCSA ACCESS Center located in Arlington, VA. As a member of the Education Committee, Seiler will aid in defining how CLEANER can become an asset for educational activities, both at the K-12 and higher education levels.

The mission of CLEANER is to radically advance the scientific and engineering knowledge base for addressing the challenges of large-scale human-stressed complex systems. CLEANER envisions the transformation of engineering education by providing more advanced data analysis, involving all science and engineering professions and enabling more effective and adaptive approaches to large-scale real world problems through experimentation. By serving on the Educational Committee within the CLEANER project, Seiler will participate in the formation of this complex research project.

“Emma is a wonderful choice for this committee. Her engineering background as well as her experience in getting young people excited about careers in engineering and science will bring a lot to this committee,” said Donna Reese, Associate Dean of Academics and Administration for the Bagley College of Engineering.

Seiler’s experience and her duties as Coordinator for Educational Outreach & Student Programs within the Bagley College will enable her to effectively implement the visions of the CLEANER project. She currently coordinates the Mississippi Region V Science and Engineering Fair and conducts science fair workshops for teachers and parents. Seiler also coordinates and supervises many educational programs within the College including Women in Action, World Images of Science and Engineering (WISE) for Women, University Familiarization Program for Minorities in Engineering (UFPME), Summer Engineering Experience and Introduction to Engineering for Teachers & Counselors summer programs.

Seiler graduated from Mississippi State University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering and then finished her masters in Civil Engineering with an Environmental emphasis in 2002. She has been an integral part of MSU’s engineering program serving educational outreach and student programs since 2004.

Before taking her current position at MSU, Seiler assisted the Water Quality Laboratory in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. She also performed land and water research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for the National Science Foundation, which funds the CLEANER project.
