Civil and Environmental Engineering Concrete Canoe team wins regional competition

May 5, 2017

Led by the Bagley College of Engineering’s Concrete Canoe team, Mississippi State civil engineering students captured eight awards at this year’s American Society of Civil Engineers Deep South Regional Conference. The conference was held at the University of Memphis.

The Concrete Canoe team took home five total trophies, highlighted by their first-place finish in the design competition for their Game of Thrones-themed canoe. The team also placed second in women’s endurance, women’s sprint and co-ed sprint events and third in the men’s endurance event.

The Mississippi State CEE surveying team finished third in their competition while civil engineering senior Augustus Raymond captured third place in the professional paper competition.

Mississippi State students also claimed second place in the “Mystery Event,” which this year saw teams duct tape a chair to a wall while providing enough support to life a team member off the floor.

A total of 37 Mississippi State students attended the conference. In addition to the concrete canoe and surveying teams, students competed in steel bridge and water filtration events.

Because of their first place win in the regional competition, the concrete canoe team will be heading to Golden, Colorado, this June to compete in the 2017 ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition.

Eric Blackmon, captain of the upcoming 2017-2018 canoe team, said he is looking forward to competing.

“We’re all so excited to travel this summer and compete against the best engineering schools in North America,” Blackmon said. “This has been such an amazing year for the canoe team and we are hoping to finish off the year with a win for House Starkville at the national competition.”
