The Mississippi State University Engineering Student Council was recently named Most Improved Council at the National Association of Engineering Student Council’s Southeast Regional Conference.
That’s no small feat given that, just a few years ago, thanks to several students graduating, the council had nearly disappeared from campus.
Engineering Student Council president Jen Fisher, a biological engineering major, said that during the 2015-16 academic year, the council had dropped to just 10 members with half set to graduate in May of 2016. The lack of membership hindered the organization’s ability to host annual events, like E-week. Additionally, many engineering students had not heard about the council, which made it more difficult to recruit new members.
But Fisher and the remaining members set out to improve the council. They attended more than 10 organization fairs and even hosted a fair of their own.
Now up to 55 members, the new and improved student council has redefined their constitution to include a host of new committees, including Recruitment and Relations, Communications, Activities and Finance. Along with those committees, the council also established a “President’s Round Table” which allows the presidents of all engineering organizations on campus to network during their time as students.
Overall, Fisher said it was a great honor to be recognized as the Southeast’s Most Improved Engineering Council, and was a testament to the hard work put in by each member.
“We are still developing a better council; however, the work and accomplishment of our council within the last year are impressive,” Fisher said. “It was a great award to earn after the growth we have seen in the past few years.”
