Mississippi State chapter of Tau Beta Pi inducts record number of new members

March 29, 2023

McCain Hall Tau Beta Pi BentThe Mississippi State chapter of Tau Beta Pi, an honor society for engineering students, recently inducted 49 new members into its ranks.

The 49 new members is a record number of inductees for the society. Open to all engineering concentrations, Tau Beta Pi invites students based on grade point average and major-specific requirements. This year’s induction ceremony included speaker Bonnie Chapman an MSU alumnus. Chapman spoke about legacy of the university’s engineering graduates, the great things they have gone on to do and how the Tau Beta Pi members are a part of that legacy.

“The current TBP student leadership has done a remarkable job of increasing the chapter’s impact on its members and the Bagley College of Engineering community. That is evidenced by the record-setting number of initiates we had this semester,” Matthew Priddy, Tau Beta Pi chapter advisor and assistant professor of mechanical engineering in MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering. “These students are some of the best within the college and to bring them together within one organization to honor and recognize their achievements is a wonderful thing."

Tau Beta Pi is the oldest universal engineering honor society and the second oldest honor society in the United States. It was founded at Lehigh University in 1885 and has over 250 chapters and 622,000 members at colleges and universities today. Mississippi State’s chapter, Mississippi Alpha, was established in 1928 and was the first chapter in Mississippi.
