NASA awards fellowship to aerospace student

STARKVILLE, Miss. –NASA’s Graduate Student Researchers Project (GSRP) has awarded a fellowship to a Mississippi State Bagley College of Engineering student.

Aerospace engineering major John Hutchins will complete a 10-week internship with the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio and receive funding for research that will be the basis of his doctoral dissertation.

“I am elated to have this opportunity. I will get to work with top-notch researchers at NASA and I hope to gain as much knowledge as I can,” Hutchins said.

A native of Grenada, Miss., Hutchins earned his bachelor’s degree from MSU in 2008. He is currently in his second year of graduate school researching numerical modeling with high performance composites. He is on track to graduate in 2009.

Selected from a national pool of applicants, GSRP Fellows are chosen based on an evaluation of each individual’s research proposal and academic qualifications. Each of the 10 national centers select fellows whose research and interests match those of active NASA scientists.

“As a NASA GSRP Fellow, John will have the opportunity to interact extensively with some of the world’s leading minds in composite materials research,” explained Dr. Tom Lacy, associate professor and 1993-96 GSRP Fellow. “Speaking from experience, he will be able to form friendships and alliances that will last him his entire career. I am delighted that John is a recipient of the award and I am sure that he will thrive in the GSRP program.”

For over 25 years, the GSRP has awarded fellowships to graduate students across the country. This year, the program awarded 90 new fellowships between each of NASA’s 10 centers.
