STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Bagley College of Engineering will launch the newest component of its freshmen engineering program in the upcoming fall semester.
Bagley’s Engineering Living Learning Community (ELLC) integrates the advantages and support of the current Engineering First-Year Experience (EFX) into the on-campus living space of freshmen engineering students.
Designed to increase the retention rates of freshman engineering majors, the program will provide assets, including on-site academic advising and engineering-specific study spaces, to students while they adapt to the engineering curriculum, as well as life on MSU’s campus. While experiencing personal growth and forming bonds with other engineering freshmen, ELLC participants will also develop essential skills for a career in engineering or computer science.
“In some respects, the freshman year can be the most challenging, as students acclimate to life away from family and friends,” said James Warnock, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. “The ELLC aims to provide a supportive community that will make the transition to college life easier, while promoting academic success in future years.”
For the initial 2016 fall semester, the ELLC program will accept 450 incoming freshmen. To accommodate students of varying financial means, the ELLC will be located in Hurst Hall and Critz Hall. With both dormitories located adjacent to Griffis and Nunnelee Halls, activities hosted by the ELLC will also accommodate engineering students enrolled in the Shackouls Honor College.
The Engineering First-Year Experience exist to provide a supportive community to engineering students as they transition into college life. Bagley’s EFX program introduces freshmen to design challenges, introductory courses, tutoring programs and mentors that enable student growth both academically and professionally.
