Letter from the Dean: January 2023

January 4, 2023

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students and Friends of the Bagley College of Engineering:

Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a relaxing holiday break and are as excited as I am to begin 2023, especially this spring semester. Here are some of our most recent points of pride:

  • Before the break, the university held a fantastic doctoral hooding ceremony and commencement ceremonies. From an engineering perspective, we had 300 total students earn their Ph.D., master’s or bachelor’s degrees, as approved by our state board. Read more about this year’s ceremonies here.
  • Industrial engineering alumnae Betsy Baker was recently featured in Woman Engineer magazine.
  • Check out the faculty, staff, and student award winners recently recognized at the BCoE Advisory Board Dinner and at the Office of Research and Economic Development Awards Banquet.
  • Check out the great feature on BCoE’s development staff.
  • Some of our department heads and I have received several questions regarding the process by which the degree programs within the Bagley College of Engineering seek accreditation.
    • ABET Accreditation is initiated by MSU BCoE.
    • The BCoE programs (Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Software Engineering (all through the EAC, Engineering Accreditation Commission), and Computer Science (through the CAC, Computing Accreditation Commission) are preparing for their 2023 ABET evaluation. The Cyber Security program will seek an initial accreditation action after the first student graduates (this mirrors what was done a few years ago with Biomedical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering)
    • All departments in this review cycle are collecting data and writing self-study reports, which will be submitted by the BCoE to ABET in July 2023.
    • A site visit will occur during fall semester 2023.
    • A final accreditation decision will be made during fall semester 2024.
